The “jardin de Valloires” was advertised everywhere. So we decided to pay a visit. At the checkout we saw enormous amounts of old people with lunch baskets, so we should have been warned. And the warning proved to be true unfortunately. As far as the wild plants part goes I can only conclude that the French do not master this concept. If you loved Sissinghurst Castle steer clear of this garden. And then there is the former vegetable garden for the monks: the usual dull squared design, without buxus thank goodness. The only really interesting things are the lane whith tables and chairs for the visitors and the Abbey itself.
De “jardin de Valloires” werd overal aanbevolen, dus besloten we die in een wandeling op te nemen. Bij de kassa hadden we gewaarschuwd moeten worden door de massa bejaarden met lunchmandjes. Maar nee, we gingen verder. Het wilde planten deel liet zien dat Fransen daar kennelijk geen kaas van hebben gegeten. Als je ooit Sissinghurst Castle hebt bezocht, blijf dan verre van deze tuin. De vroegere groetentuin van de monniken is getransformeerd tot een doorsnee Franse kasteeltuin, zonder buxus godzijdank, vierkant en saai tot om de hoek. De enige echt interessante dingen zijn de prachtige bomenlaan met zitjes en de Abdij zelf.
