I have no vivid memories on how we got to the south point of the mainland. We had planned to visit an iron age place called Scateness. But now that I examine the pictures I realize that we visited Jarlshof instead. Maybe for the better. Jarlshof is rumored to have round dwellings dating back to the Picts, 500-700 AD. Another point of interest was the lighthouse complex on Sumburgh head. When we saw the fog horn we were extremely grateful that it was not a misty day. And we were also lucky in shooting the British Airways plane on which we arrived.
Ik weet echt niet meer hoe we op de zuidpunt zijn gekomen. Er zal vast een keer een bus gereden hebben. Bij het vliegveld zagen we het toestel waarmee we gekomen waren. Doel van de trip was een nederzetting uit de ijzertijd die Scateness heet. Maar toen ik de foto’s bekeek zag ik dat ze van Jarlshof zijn. Misschien wel zo goed, want daar kun je ronde “huizen” zien die door de Picten zijn gebouwd, zo tussen 500 en 700 van onze jaartelling. Leuk was ook dat we een kolonie papagaaiduikers konden bespieden. En het vuurtorencomplex op de zuidpunt was beslist de moeite waard. De gigantische misthoorn maakte dat we extra blij waren dat het niet mistig was.
