Westray was the first island we visited. The ferry dropped us at a jetty at the south of the island, where we got a lift to Pierowall. There we stumbled upon the event of the year, the great summer regatta. We didn’t see much of the activities as it was rather blustery weather, but people did seem to enjoy themselves. Pierowall was the only substantial settlement at the time and the population of the island numbered around 700 people. There is a ruin of a real castle, Noltland Castle, so something must have happened here in the past.
Westray was om transportlogistieke* reden het eerste eiland dat we bezochten. De Golden Mariuana uit Kirkwall zette ons bij een piertje in het zuiden af, waar we gelukkig een lift kregen naar Pierowall. Daar vielen we met onze neus in de boter want de jaarlijkse regatta was net bezig. Niet veel van gezien overigens omdat ons hoofd er zowat afwoei. Pierrowall was de enige plaats van betekenis. Er staat zowaar een ruine van een echt kasteel op het eiland, Noltland Castle.
