This part of the Meuse is characterized by the nuclear power plant of Chooz. The original unit is already demolished. I hope it was safely done because I stood right next to it. The present unit is twice as powerful and a second one will be started real soon. I have mixed feelings towards nuclear energy, mainly because the waste is still not taken care of. Aside from the nuclear technology those cooling towers are mighty impressive. Further upstream at Ham-sur-Meuse there is a rougher spot in the river with sandbanks, shallows and islands. Vireux is a nice town with a sort of art-nouveau marie.
Dit gedeelte van de Maas wordt overschaduwd door de kerncentrale van Chooz. De oorspronkelijke centrale is alweer ontmanteld. Ik hoop dat dat stralingsvrij gebeurd is want ik stond er pal naast. De nieuwe centrale is twee maal zo sterk en een tweede unit wordt binnenkort in gebruik genomen. In het licht van klimaatverandering denk ik tegenwoordig genuanceerder over nucleaire energie. Als het afvalprobleem eindelijk maar eens goed opgelost wordt. Wat je er ook van denkt, die hoge koeltorens zijn verdraaid indrukwekkend. Stroomopwaarts bij Ham-sur-Meuse heeft de Maas een wat minder voorspelbaar karakter blijkens de eilandjes en zandbanken. In Vireux staat een wonderlijk gemeentehuis dat een beetje aan art nouveau doet denken.
