As we stayed just outside Rocroi we decided to pay a visit (we went there by bike). It is a town surrounded by walls in the form of a five-pointed star. The town is very much a mix of styles with the main street at the south side and the square having the oldest, most impressive buildings. The fortifications are largely in various states of decay and the water which was part of the defense system is completely gone. Nevertheless there were many things to see of which an underground tunnel was the most impressive.
We verbleven vlakbij Rocroi (we gingen er op de fiets naartoe) dus ons eerste bezoek gold de oude stad. Die ligt in een stervormig verdedigingswerk. De hoofdstraat aan de zuidkant en het centrale plein hadden iets van de oude grandeur bewaard. De fortificaties verkeren meest in diverse staten van verval en het water dat eens een essentieel onderdeel was van de verdediging is compleet verdwenen, kurkdroge grachten resteren. Er worden wel pogingen gedaan om een en ander op te knappen zoals de ondergrondse tunnel die indruk op ons maakte. Later hebben we nog bij het italiaanse restaurant gegeten.
