Jyvaskyla is not a beautiful town. During the post-war years concrete made its way to the city centre. But luckily many of the more interesting wooden buildings have been preserved, especially those showing art nouveau design elements. What surprised us were the murals and other street art. Somehow we had not linked street art to the phlegmatic character of the Fins. The last four pictures show our airbnb apartment in the modern part of the city, Elvin awaiting our arrival on a bike and a squirl waving goodbye with its tail.
Juvaskula is niet wat je noemt mooi. In de na-oorlogse jaren is er net als bij ons betonnen hoogbouw binnengeslopen. Maar gelukkig heeft men veel oude houten gebouwen weten te bewaren, vooral die met jugendstil kenmerken. Wat we verrassend vonden waren de vele openbare kunstuitingen zoals muurschilderingen. Op een of andere manier hadden we dat niet van de nuchtere Finnen verwacht. De laatste vier foto’s tonen ons airbnb appartement, met Elvin die ons verwelkomt op de fiets en een eekhoorn die ons gedag zegt door met zijn staart te wuiven.
