We continued our cycling trip of last year along the Canal des Ardennes, starting in Semuy. One thing that stood out this year was the lush growth of aquatic plants in the canal. Normally you may see some kind of pruning by means of a special boat that sits very low in the water. But this year we didn’t see one. Was the Canal Authority surprised by the growing conditions of the hot weather? Or was there no budget? Were they hoping that the free market would solve it?
We vervolgden dit jaar onze fietstocht langs het Canal des Ardennes, waarbij we verder gingen vanaf Semuy. Een ding wat ons meteen opviel was de explosieve groei van waterplanten in het kanaal. In het verleden zagen we altijd wel mensen in speciale bootjes bezig met snoeien, maar nu hebben we er geen een gezien. Was the kanaalbeheerder verrast door het extreem warme groeiweer? Of was er simpelweg geen budget? Een verschijnsel dat we maar al te goed kennen uit eigen land waar de politiek hoopt dat de markt het wel oplost.
