Schiermonnikoog is one of the smaller Wadden Islands. Just like Vlieland it has only one village. Crossing the Wadden sea by ferry you will notice two lighthouses. The white one is the former lighthouse, which became a water tower when the red lighthouse was built. The island is a nature reserve, with a village and agriculture on the west side and pure nature on the east side. The last 25 years the island has grown more than 2 kilometers to the east. A holiday on Schiermonnikoog feels rather relaxed as there is little in the way of high culture.
Schiermonnikoog vinden wij vooral leuk omdat het zo knus en gezellig is. Het massatoerisme van Terschelling en Ameland is er gelukkig nog niet doorgedrongen, wat wellicht verklaart waarom heel het Gooi er in zonnige weekends te vinden is. Al jaren proberen we van het eind van het Waterstaatpad naar de Balg te lopen, maar het blijkt steeds te ver. Dat wordt toch een keer enkele reis met de Balgexpress.
